5 Golden Rules to Protect Your Skin
Sunlight is an essential part of life. However, uncontrolled and prolonged exposure can lead to serious issues such as sunspots, broken capillaries, redness, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. That’s why choosing the right sunscreen is important not just in summer but all year round.
1. SPF Is Not Just a Number, It Means Protection
The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value commonly seen on sunscreens indicates how long it protects the skin against UVB rays.
SPF 30 is usually sufficient for daily use.
However, if you have fair skin, deal with pigmentation problems, or are exposed to intense sunlight, choose products with SPF 50 or higher.
High-SPF products offer longer protection, but they are not enough alone. Reapply every 2–3 hours.
2. Broad Spectrum Protection: For Both UVA and UVB
Looking at SPF alone is not enough. A sunscreen should protect against both UVB (burns) and UVA (aging and DNA damage) rays.
Always check if the product is labeled “broad spectrum” on the packaging.
3. Choose Products Suitable for Your Skin Type
Every skin is different, and not all sunscreens are suitable for everyone:
For oily and acne-prone skin: Water-based and non-comedogenic products
For dry skin: Formulas with moisturizing properties
For sensitive skin: Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and mineral-based sunscreens
For pigmentation-prone skin: Products with antioxidants and anti-spot ingredients
4. Read the Ingredients: Chemical or Mineral?
Sunscreens are mainly divided into two types:
Chemical filters: Absorbed by the skin and neutralize sun rays through a chemical reaction. Lightweight texture.
Mineral (physical) filters: Form a barrier on the skin surface and reflect the rays. More suitable for sensitive or baby skin.
5. Don’t Skip Frequency and Quantity
No matter how good your sunscreen is, if not applied in the right amount and frequency, it won’t provide enough protection.
Apply 20–30 minutes before sun exposure.
An average adult should use about one teaspoon for the face and neck area.
Reapply after sweating, swimming, or wiping the skin.
BONUS: Use Sunscreen Not Just in Summer, But Every Day!
Many people use sunscreen only in summer or on vacation. However, daily exposure to light—even from computer screens or through windows—can accelerate skin aging.
